Passion and Hard Work Help Drive Vern Yip’s Success

“As long as you pursue something with passion, and you work hard at it, it’s all going to be fine.”
– Vern Yip, Interior and Product Designer, TV Host, Author, UNICEF Ambassador
Passion is defined as a strong and barely controllable emotion.

Hard work is defined as a great deal of effort or endurance.

Together, passion and hard work have helped drive Vern Yip become a staple in the interior design industry over the past three decades.

He’s a TV personality we recognize from hosting the likes of “Trading Spaces” and “Deserving Design;” we’ve seen his books “Design Wise” and “Vacation at Home” on bookshelves in our favorite shops; we’ve fawned over his wallcoverings, trimmings and fabrics with his product design for Fabricut’s Trend; and many of us may also recognize him for his efforts in designing UNICEF’s annual Snowflake Ball.

Yip says he knew as a child that he wanted to be a designer—just like so many of us.

“But I was stressed about it as a kid, and very much felt like I could only be creative on the side as a hobby,” he says.

So, he pursued degrees in college that some may consider more “practical,” but he still found his way back to creativity, and today attributes passion and hard work to helping him find success in a field he has loved since childhood.

“I feel incredibly lucky to make a living as a designer and have these opportunities,” he says. “As long as you pursue something with passion, and you work hard at it, it’s all going to be fine.”

We had the pleasure of meeting Yip during the Spring High Point Market in April and invited him to interview with us recently, sharing more about his experiences in interior design and what led him to pursue opportunities in television, writing, product design and philanthropy.
