February Finds: Benjamin Johnston's New Book Release!

Accomplished Designer Releases His First Book

“The more things you’re interested in, the better your work will be.” – Michael Beirut, Graphic Designer, Design Critic and Educator

While Benjamin Johnston’s main focuses may be interior design and his firm, Benjamin Johnston Design in Houston, he’s also an artist, teacher and tastemaker.

And, mostly recently, he added author to the list with the release of his first book, “Refined Interiors: Timeless Homes for Modern Living” by Rizzoli.

“It was fun writing the book and putting into words what hadn’t really existed in conversation, thought or in process in the office,” he says, “and be able to crystalize and articulate what we did. It was a worthwhile experience.”

In this debut book with Rizzoli, Johnston unveils eight recently completed residences that embody his distinctive aesthetic and design philosophies.

“Our entire industry thrives on collaboration, and I’m really excited to be able to have this book that is really a reflection of the incredible contractors, artisans, craftsman and vendors that we had the privilege to work with throughout this process and be able to have something tangible to really show for all that wonderful experience and collaboration together,” he adds.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Johnston recently to learn more about his design background and his passion for creativity. Be sure to check out the article below and our full interview with him.

Be your own algorithm.

By Ericka Saurit

Why consistency across platforms isn’t boring, it’s how you build trust.

Last month, we talked about content with context…why your posts need a purpose beyond “staying visible.”

This month, let’s talk about consistency.

Because despite what social media tells you, the goal isn’t to go viral. It’s to be reliable.

Trust isn’t built in a single post. It’s built through repetition. Through familiarity. Through showing up the same way, again and again, in the places that matter most to your audience.

That’s what I mean when I say: be your own algorithm.

Why New Designers Need Liability Insurance From Day One

Even if you’re just starting out or don’t have a big client list yet, Interior Designer Liability Insurance is essential from day one. Claims don’t wait until you’re “established.” They happen without warning, and the worst feeling is realizing you’re uninsured the day you need it. Many new designers focus on branding, equipment, or setting up their business and push insurance to the bottom of the list, but that leaves you exposed the moment you step into a client’s home.

Amanda Arcone, who built a full-service interior design and window treatment studio in Franconia, NH, made insurance a priority from the start. With her background in commercial banking, she knew entering someone’s home comes with real risks, so protecting her business early was just as important as forming her company or setting up her studio. It’s a smart mindset every designer should adopt.

DSA Insider: Contract Tips, Events and Fresh Reads

Design Contract Tip From Attorney Wendy Estela:

Tip No. 10: Termination Clauses Matter

Establish clear termination clauses that protect both parties, including conditions for ending the agreement and how final payments and incomplete work will be handled. Fixed/Flat Fee payments are non-refundable, but if designer terminates, designer may return a pro-rated portion of the fee as determined in designer's discretion.

Clear termination clauses protect both the designer and the client by setting expectations before emotions or disputes arise. For example, if a client decides to pause or cancel a project mid-design, a well-written clause clarifies that fixed or flat fees are non-refundable because time, expertise, and resources have already been committed. At the same time, if a designer needs to terminate the agreement—due to nonpayment, scope creep, or lack of communication—the contract can allow the designer to return a prorated portion of the fee at their discretion, creating a fair and professional exit for both sides.

Attorney Wendy Estela often reminds that clarity helps designers avoid uncomfortable negotiations, maintain boundaries, and exit projects cleanly while protecting the value of their work.
